2 Reasons Why You Need To Have Your Chimney Cleaned Regularly

Elizabeth Mendoza

When you have a fireplace in your home, you may be meticulous about keeping the area in and around the structure clear of ash and charred wood. However, you also need to make sure that your chimney is cleaned on a regular basis for a couple of reasons.

1.  Reduces the Amount of Creosote Accumulation

When you burn wood in your fireplace, smoke is not the only thing that is produced by the fire. Burning wood also creates a sticky substance that resembles tar which clings to the sides of your chimney.

While a few spots of creosote is not much cause for alarm, it does become a problem when a thick layer forms on the interior sides of your chimney. Because the creosote is highly flammable, it creates a fire hazard. And, the more of the tarry substance you have inside your chimney, the greater the risk it will combust and start a fire.

However, if you have your chimney cleaned out every few months or more often if you use your fireplace constantly, the creosote does not have a chance to form a thick layer. This then reduces the risk of a fire caused by the combustible material.

2.  Keeps the Flue Clear of Soot

Another reason why you need to have your chimney cleaned is that it helps keep the flue clear of soot buildup. The flue is responsible for ensuring the proper ventilation of the chimney each time a fire is burning in your fireplace.

If soot coats the flue, however, it is no longer able to clear the smoke out of the chimney. Instead of going up and out of your home, the smoke will start to accumulate in the room in which the fireplace is located. Eventually, the smoke will start to spread to other rooms in your home.

Also, since the fire does create carbon monoxide, a blocked flue will cause this dangerous gas to buildup inside your house, which could potentially lead to carbon monoxide poisoning in members of your household. Having the chimney and flue cleaned regularly helps keep the air flowing and excessive carbon monoxide gas out of your house.

To keep your home and family safe while enjoying your fireplace, it is imperative that you keep the chimney clear of soot and creosote. Especially if it has been a while since you had it cleaned, contact a chimney sweep, such as at A & A Chimney Sweep, to discuss your options for scheduling regular visits.
