Keep Your Drains Clean Without Causing Any Damage

Elizabeth Mendoza

Having to call a plumber to unclog your drains is expensive. While there are situations where this is the best choice, but by taking advantage of your other options, you can usually keep things from going that far. By learning how to use the tools available to you, you can keep your drains clear without causing any damage to your plumbing.

Drain Cleaning Products

The first thing that most people reach for when a drain is running slow is commercial drain cleaner. When it comes to the hair and soap scum, there aren't any options available to you that will do a better job. This is because the harsh chemicals in the product are actually strong enough to dissolve these tough materials. If your drains are sluggish, this is the best choice to get the water flowing again.

However, it is important to be careful when choosing this drain cleaning type of product. That caustic solution can dissolve your pipes along with the clog if it spends too much time in the pipes. If your pipes are completely clogged, it is time to call a plumber. Leaving that caustic chemical in the pipes can eat away at the pipes, and the plumber will be none to please to have to work around the hazard.

These chemicals are also inappropriate for regular maintenance. While they may not be in the pipes long enough to do any serious damage on a single usage, the effect is cumulative. If you use these products to do a monthly cleaning, you will find yourself investing in new plumbing before too long.

Natural Drain Cleaners

While natural drain cleaners won't do much for a drain that is almost completely clogged, they can prevent issues from getting that far. Since they are created from common household products, they are less expensive than their specialized cousins, and, better still, they do not cause damage to your plumbing with repeated use.

There are plenty of different recipes available, but the main components are usually baking soda, vinegar and hot water. They work because the reaction between the baking soda and vinegar creates bubbles that expand and work to scrub the sides of the plumbing. The hot water helps to get the chemicals deeper into the pipe as well as acting as a catalyst for the chemical reaction. Some recipes will add additional cleaning agents such as salt to increase the cleaning power. Minor clogs can even be removed by combining these mixtures with a plunger to add some pressure behind the clog.

Preventative Maintenance

The best way to prevent having to call a plumber is to keep your drains in good condition. Using the natural cleaners regularly is one way to help keep the lines clear. Another is to avoid stopping them up all together. While soap scum will be a constant threat, you can use a trap to catch hair before it goes down the drain and becoming a place for soap scum to collect.

In the kitchen, throw waste food in the trash or the compost, not down the garbage disposal. The disposal is designed to handle food waste, but only the little bits that slip down the drain, not your entire plate of leftovers. When you do run the disposal, be sure to run plenty of water at the same time to ensure the food makes it through the drain.

When your drains become completely clogged, you need to call a plumber to have them safely opened. However, you will usually have some warning as the drain begins to slow. By resolving the issue in the early stages, you can often avoid the cost of an appointment.
